We turn inland today to Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka's oldest royal capital, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, established in 377 BCE. It serves as the cradle of Sri Lankan Buddhism and an active pilgrimage site famed for advanced engineering, massive reservoirs, and colossal stupas. Key landmarks include the Jetavanaramaya, the world’s largest solid brick structure, and the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, the oldest human-planted tree.
Afterwards, back to Anuradhapura Hotel.
After breakfast this morning, you'll head to the beautiful Minneriya National Park.Established in 1938 in Sri Lanka's North Central Province, the Minneriya-Giritale Sanctuary is a biodiverse haven of lush evergreen forests and ancient reservoirs centered around a 3rd-century AD watering system.
As a vital part of the wider Minneriya and Kaudulla ecosystem, this officially designated Important Bird Area supports leopards, sloth bears, and over 160 bird species. Most famously, the park hosts the world's largest gathering of wild Asian elephants between May and September, drawing hundreds of majestic animals to feed on the fresh grass exposed by receding water levels.
After hotel checkout this morning, travel to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a 5th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring ancient frescoes, a Mirror Wall, and hydraulic gardens. After climbing its 1,200 steps through the iconic Lion’s Paw gateway, continue your journey to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's medieval capital.
This 122-hectare archaeological sanctuary seamlessly blends Buddhist and Hindu history, highlighted by the majestic Gal Vihara granite statues, the Sacred Quadrangle, the Royal Palace, and the vast Parakrama Samudra reservoir.
