Offering a dramatic reprieve from the tropical warmth of the lowlands, temperatures average a mild 16°C (61°F), with night-time lows occasionally dipping toward freezing in January and February.

Established as a colonial sanctuary in the 19th century by British civil servants and planters, the town features mock-Tudor and Victorian architecture, manicured English-style rose gardens, the historic red-brick Nuwara Eliya Post Office, and the 19th-century Nuwara Eliya Golf Club.

Positioned at the heart of the high-grown tea district, the surrounding emerald-green mountain slopes are covered in manicured tea gardens that produce some of the world's finest, most delicate orange pekoe teas.

Acts as the primary jumping-off point for excursions to Gregory Lake, Hakgala Botanical Garden, and the high-altitude plateau of Horton Plains National Park with its dramatic World's End precipice.

How to Get There

Nuwara Eliya is located roughly 160 kilometers east of Colombo and 76 kilometers south of Kandy. Option 1: By Train + Short Taxi (The Most Scenic Route)-From Kandy : Board the famous blue up-country train straight to Nanu Oya Station (3.5 to 4 hours). From Colombo: Take an express train from Colombo: to Nanu Oya ( 6.5 to 7 hours). Option 2: By Private Vehicle or Taxi -From Colombo (4.5 - 5 hours), From Kandy (2 - 2.5 hours).

Best Time to Visit

Early morning (5:30 AM – 8:30 AM) for high-altitude nature treks and late afternoon (3:30 PM – 5:30 PM) for enjoying the town’s colonial lakeside and gardens.
