Overview

The area comprises three distinct zones: Villus, Dry Zone forests and Red Cliffs.

Because of its immense size and dense foliage, Wilpattu serves as a peaceful, uncrowded alternative to Yala for high-end wildlife tracking.

Sri Lankan Leopard: A premier global stronghold for Panthera pardus kotiya . Tracking leopards here requires patience, as they are typically photographed stepping out from the dense forest borders onto the open sandy banks of the villus.

Sri Lankan Sloth Bear: The park protects a highly stable population of these shaggy predators. They are frequently observed ripping into termite mounds or climbing native trees.

Mega-fauna & Avian Kingdoms: Home to wild Asian elephants, mugger crocodiles, spotted deer, and water buffaloes.

The Story

Cradle of Sri Lankan civilization.

According to the ancient Mahavamsa chronicle, the exiled Indian Prince Vijaya washed ashore on the copper-red sands of Kudrimalai in 543 BC, naming the island Thambapanni.

Tucked deep within the interior jungles near Kali Villu are the weathered stone pillars of Kuveni’s Palace, the legendary home of the indigenous queen who helped establish the island's first kingdom.

It is world-renowned for its distinct, high-canopy dry-zone forests and a rare geological network of natural lakes.

By Private Vehicle, Taxi, or Tuk-Tuk (Most Convenient)- From Anuradhapura (approx. 40 minutes / 35 km), From Puttalam Town (approx. 40 minutes / 43 km), From Colombo & the Airport (approx. 3.5 to 4 hours / 180 km), From Kalpitiya (approx. 1.5 hours / 85 km). By Public Bus (Most Budget-Friendly) and by Train (The Coastal Rail Route) also available.

Best Time to Visit

Early Morning (6:00 AM – 10:00 AM) — Best for Leopards & Sloth Bears. Midday (10:00 AM – 2:00 PM) — Deep Jungle Retreat. Late Afternoon (2:00 PM – 6:00 PM) — Best for Elephants & Crocodiles
