Ancient human infrastructure created a thriving modern wildlife haven.

The park's geography is anchored around the historic Minneriya Tank, a colossal artificial reservoir built in the 3rd century AD by King Mahasen. The surrounding terrain is a vibrant mix of tropical dry mixed evergreen forests, thorny scrublands, deep wetlands, and vast open grasslands.

As regional waterholes dry up, up to 300 to 400 wild elephants migrate along protected jungle corridors to Minneriya's exposed lakebed. Here, they feed on lush, fresh grass, bathe, play, and socialize openly on the plains every afternoon.

The park supports 24 mammal species—including the endangered Sri Lankan leopard, sloth bear, purple-faced langur, and sambar deer.

Avian Abundance: It is a designated Important Bird Area (IBA), home to over 160 bird species, including large flocks of painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, and cormorants that fish along the reservoir banks.

"The Gathering"

This is the park's main attraction and is widely recognized as the world's largest seasonal gathering of Asian elephants, where hundreds of wild elephants congregate.

Minneriya Tank

A massive, 3,000-hectare rainwater reservoir built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century CE. This ancient engineering wonder forms the park's core ecosystem.

Minneriya Park Viewpoint

A tall, strategically placed wooden and metal observation tower overlooking the open plains of the park. It provides safari-goers with an incredible bird's-eye view.

The Story

Cradle of Sri Lankan civilization.

According to the ancient Mahavamsa chronicle, the exiled Indian Prince Vijaya washed ashore on the copper-red sands of Kudrimalai in 543 BC, naming the island Thambapanni.

Tucked deep within the interior jungles near Kali Villu are the weathered stone pillars of Kuveni’s Palace, the legendary home of the indigenous queen who helped establish the island's first kingdom.

It is world-renowned for its distinct, high-canopy dry-zone forests and a rare geological network of natural lakes.

By Private Vehicle, Taxi, or Tuk-Tuk (Most Convenient)- From Habarana Town (10 minutes/8 Km), From Sigiriya (40 minutes / 25 km), From Dambulla (40 minutes / 32 km), From Kandy (approx. 2.5 hours / 95 km). By Public Bus (Most Budget-Friendly) also available.

Best Time to Visit

Late Afternoon (3:00 PM – 6:00 PM) — Best for "The Elephant Gathering" and Early Morning (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM) — Best for Birdwatchers. Midday (10:00 AM – 2:00 PM) — Avoid Completely.
