Overview

A unique geographical setting where a mirror-calm river lagoon runs parallel to a pristine ocean beach.

Located along the southwest shoreline in the Galle District, it sits roughly 65 kilometers south of Colombo and 56 kilometers north of the historic Galle Fort.

This positions it as an upscale, peaceful alternative to the busier party beaches further down the southern coast.

The beach occupies a highly distinct natural formation known as the Hikkaduwa Peninsula (or spit).

Hikkaduwa offers the most developed adventure infrastructure on the island. Guided boat trips cruise down the mangrove-rich channels of the Hikkaduwa River to spot wild crocodiles, large Asian water monitors, purple-faced langurs, and rare birds.Tours to 'Bawa Estate' and visits to sea turtle conservation centers are also available.

Seenigama Devalaya

A historic Hindu-Buddhist shrine built entirely on a tiny, isolated rocky island located just a few hundred meters off the main coastal highway.

The defining feature of Hikkaduwa is its extraordinary, ribbon-like peninsula geography: a narrow spit of pristine land flanked by the rolling waves of the Indian Ocean to the west and the expansive, mirror-flat waters of the Hikkaduwa River (Bentara Ganga) to the east.

Hikkaduwa holds a monumental place in global design history as the cradle of Tropical Modernism architecture. It was here that legendary master architect Geoffrey Bawa pioneered a new structural movement, demolishing a colonial-era Dutch fort rest house to build the groundbreaking Hikkaduwa Beach Hotel in the late 1960s.

The unique double-fronted aquatic ecosystem gives rise to a highly versatile activity landscape.The immediate interior bordering the riverbanks is packed with world-famous cultural and ecological landmarks.

How to Get There

It is exceptionally easy to access via the expressway, public train, or long-distance buses. Via Expressways, from Colombo City Centre-1.15 hours, from Kandy-4 hours, from Bandaranaike International Airport-1.45 hours.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning (6:30 AM – 9:00 AM) for wildlife and boat trips, and the late afternoon (4:00 PM – 6:30 PM) for water sports and sunsets.
